Reflections on Hyannis Harbor : A few days ago I went down to Hyannis Harbor to do some shooting. The changes that have been made to the harbor area are striking and folks were taking full advantage of the beautiful late afternoon. I saw the reflections of the harbor in the water and the colors, shapes and abstract design were unique and ever changing and the water rippled and moved. I tried to capture these reflections and hope you enjoy the results.

Italy 2011- Lake Como and Venice : We love Italy and vowed to return when we left Tuscany. This time we headed for Lake Como in northern Italy and settled in the wonderful town of Varenna. The beauty is unimaginable. It is peaceful and quiet with warm breezes and people. The food is magnificent (try ravioli filled with lake fish). From Varenna we took a train to Venice which is everything you ever imagined. Enjoy the photos.

Rockport : When the kids were a lot younger we used to rent a room (#14) at the Good Harbor Beach Inn in Gloucester/Rockport, MA. The Inn is right on the beach and we would get up early with a cup of coffee and walk the beach. At night, as the day would draw to a close we would walk the beach again. We went there in good times and bad and somehow this special place made the world seem brighter. Barb and I went up to Rockport for a day trip this week (3/31/06) and it is still beautiful. We'll go back again this spring and I'll add to the Gallery. In the meantime--enjoy!

Yosemite-Carmel-SF : In September we headed out to California to revisit San Francisco and Carmel and to visit for the first time, Yosemite. The trip was a complete success. Yosemite is unbelievably beautiful and is clearly a 'bucket list' visit. Carmel has a beat of its own with great coffee, great food, and great scenery. San Francisco is San Francisco--enough said.

Late Winter, Early Spring : We planned this trip for about nine months. The idea was to head west to Kanab, Utah for a month and to explore and photograph the beauty of the region from mid-March to mid-April. On the way we stopped off for a few days in Durango, Colorado for a Rocky Mountain High. Now we are in Kanab, the weather is fine and this town has the friendliest people on earth. The month we spent in Kanab was delightful. We hit the major National Parks and some little known areas that highlighted the beauty of the region. The last couple of days was spent in Moab viewing Arches NP and tomorrow we head East.

The Edge of the Sea : In 1955 Rachel Carson wrote a book entitled "the Edge of the Sea". In it she talks about the marginal world describing the edge of the sea as "a strange and beautiful place." She goes on the say that "for no two successive days is the shore line precisely the same." For a Cape Cod photographer this fact provides endless opportunities to record the changes that take place to the shore line whether caused by the constant movement of the tides or the never ending wind. This gallery is meant to capture the beauty of the edge of the sea.

Monhegan Island, Maine : Monhegan Island Earlier this month we drove from the Cape up to Maine’s mid coast. Our destination was Port Clyde where we had reservations on the 10:30 AM boat to Monhegan Island. The trip, under cloudy skies, took about an hour. The seas were choppy but bearable and our companions on the boat were “BIRDERS” easily identified by their binoculars and bird identification books. A friend of mine had sent me some material a few years ago which spoke of Monhegan Island and we were off to see if the island lived up to the description. Monhegan lies about ten miles off the Maine coast. It is about a mile long and a mile and a half long. There are some 75 year round residents on the island mostly folks in the fishing industry and artists. During the summer there are a lot of day trippers and this weekend there were a good number of birders. We were about a week early in terms of the island being completely open but the two ‘general’ stores provided the essentials and a few restaurants were open. We stayed in an apartment (Brackett’s Oar House) which was delightful. It was clean and cozy and located right on a small beach facing Manana Island. The light on Monhegan is wonderful which perhaps explains the number of artists on the island. We want to go back and prepare early for sunrise shots from the hill near the lighthouse and keeper’s house which is now a museum. All in all this is a wonderful place.

Rose Island Light : Rose Island is in Newport, R.I. The Rose Island Foundation which owns the island says it this way "A mile offshore and a century in the past lies "The Little Lighthouse that Could." The foundation's web site is really good as it explains the history of this wonderful place and offers overnights at the Keeper's house. (http://www.roseislandlighthouse.org/learn_about.html) We recently spent a night there and it is a wonderful experience for those that want to just get away for a quiet time.

Highland Light : The Highland Light in Truro on Cape Cod is now part of a wonderful nine hole links type golf course. While playing the course I came upon this view of the light house and have gone back a number of times to catch the early morning light as it touches the lighthouse. Arizona--Ft. Bowie : Ft Bowie is in southern Arizona. It was first created in 1862 in an effort to protect Apache Pass and the water source at Apache Spring from the Apaches. Between 1862 and 1866, Fort Bowie served as the nerve center for military campaigns against hostile Chiricahua Apaches led first by Cochise and then by Geronimo. The fort closed in 1894 and there is not much left. To get to the ruins requires a 1 1/2 mile trek but it is well worth the effort. There is a stillness at the ruins that touches you and you can close your eyes and only imagine...........

Arizona House 2006 : This is a beautiful house in Hereford, Arizona which is a bit south of Sierra Vista. Your Bio

My name is John Markus and I have been interested in photography since I was 14 years old and took photographs of trees near the caddy house where I worked.
Over the years I have acquired camera equipment that started with Minolta moved on the Olympus and ultimately to my current bag of Nikon equipment.
I love photography. I love the process of taking photos and then using today’s technology to produce the very best images that I can. Photography makes me look at the world in a very different way. It opens my eyes and allows me to truly enjoy this beautiful world.
I have been blessed to be able to travel during my working career. We lived in Europe for several years and I continue to follow the wayward wind to observe and capture what I can and to share those images with anyone who cares to take a look.
