Ft Bowie is in southern Arizona. It was first created in 1862 in an effort to protect Apache Pass and the water source at Apache Spring from the Apaches. Between 1862 and 1866, Fort Bowie served as the nerve center for military campaigns against hostile Chiricahua Apaches led first by Cochise and then by Geronimo. The fort closed in 1894 and there is not much left. To get to the ruins requires a 1 1/2 mile trek but it is well worth the effort. There is a stillness at the ruins that touches you and you can close your eyes and only imagine...........
